Fairy tales are happy, heartwarming, and the protagonist always wins. At least, that's what I thought before the fairy tale unit, and the darker origins and meanings behind the magical stories were exposed. Fairy tales were really told as a way to make the horrors of life during those time periods more bearable for those growing up in them. It glorified arranged marriages, and had extremely patriarchal themes where women were only good for their beauty and ability to serve their husband. Women were defined by their beauty, anyone ugly was always the antagonist. It also had the theme of revenge, and how when something bad happened to the protagonist, they always ended up getting revenge on those who wronged them, possibly corrupting them in the process, making a vicious cycle.
